BEFORE YOU BUILD, REMODEL, OR OPEN A BUSINESS...
A building permit represents the City’s authorization to begin construction. Building permits are required for demolition, repairs and remodeling. Each permit has its own specific guidelines, which can be obtained from the City Building Department information desk.
Building permits may take up to five weeks for processing and approval after the correct drawings have been filed. For less involved projects, the review process takes considerably less time. An advanced permit can be issued upon request to authorize early construction starts when time is of a priority.
Building permit fees are specific to each case. At the City Building Department information desk, a list and description of each fee can be obtained.
Certificate Of Occupancy
Before you open a new business, you are required to complete an Occupancy Permit. This will verify that the zoning for your business is allowed in the location you have chosen. Call Development Director Dan Lorek at 614-338-3103 (e-mail dan.lorek@whitehall-oh.us) or call the Building Department at 614-237-8612 to identify the zoning classification and the allowed uses.
Once it is determined that zoning is correct, the completed Occupancy Permit will generate a safety inspection by our Building and Fire departments to make certain that the space is in compliance with current building codes. Verify zoning is correct before signing your lease.
After a building permit is issued and construction is complete, the City must verify the building was built according to Codes. Upon approval, a Certificate of Use & Occupancy will be given.
